Согласно переписи 2020 года, население городка Lost Nation составляет 434 человека. С высоты птичьего полета, он кажется островком, затерянным в полях восточной Айовы. Lost Nation похож на тысячи таких же маленьких городков одноэтажной Америки. Но две вещи делают Lost Nation уникальным:  его загадочное название и преданность его жителей истории и традициям своего города.  
According to the 2020 census, the population of Lost Nation is 434. From the bird-eye's view, it is a tiny island lost in the fields of eastern Iowa. Lost Nation looks like a thousand other little towns of American midwest. Two features make it unique: its enigmatic name and the devotion of its citizens to the history and traditions of their town. 
В романе Главная Улица Синклер Льюис пишет "Главная улица [одного Американского городка]— это продолжение главной улицы любого другого городка. Главная улица – это вершина цивилизации."  Main Street, действительно, центр цивилизации Lost Nation.
In his novel Main Street, Sinclair Lewis writes, "Main Street [of one American town] is the continuation of Main Street anywhere. Main Street is the climax of [a small town's] civilization." Indeed, Main Street in Lost Nation is at the center of its civilization. 
Остальное – кварталы жилых домов.
What is left is several blocks of residential houses.
По правде сказать, сто лет назад цивилизации на Main Street было больше. Тогда в Lost Nation останавливались поезда, процветали бизнесы, был оперный театр. Но ушла железная дорога и ушла цивилизация. Сейчас на Main Street расположена почта, пожарная станция и кабак под емким названием Stagger Inn (кабак из которого выходишь шатаясь). 
To be fair, a hundred years ago, there was more civilization on Main Street. Then the trains stopped at Lost Nation, business was flourishing, and Lost Nation even had its own opera house. But the railroad went away, taking with it the Lost Nation civilization. Now a post office, a fire station, and  Stagger Inn are all that remains.

The cemetery of Lost Nation is almost as large as the town itself. World wars exploded far away from Lost Nation. In the local newspaper dated November 1918, the news of Germany's surrender is lost between an advertisement of a new storage barn and a church dinner menu. 
Никто толком не знает как городок получил свое загадочное название. Все версии связанны с потерей кого-то кем-то; ни одна не убедительна. Но название уникально: на всю Америку есть только один Lost Nation. Лостнейшенцы помешаны на истории своего города и предков.
Nobody knows for sure how the town got its enigmatic name. All myths tell the story of somebody losing someone or getting lost. None of the myths is persuasive enough. But the name is unique. The town is the only incorporated Lost Nation in the US. Lostnationers are devoted to the history of their town and the ancestors who founded it.

St Valentine's Day celebration in Presbyterian Church features the presentation by a local historian on the history of notable Lost Nation families, followed by a trivia game. 
Джим Шрёдер, бывший мэр Lost Nation, коллекционируют все связанное с историей города. Часть экспонатов хранится в библиотеке.
Jim Schroeder, the former mayor of Lost Nation, collects memorabilia about the town's history. 
В эпоху процветания у городка была своя газета Lost Nation Press. Теперь еженедельно издается информационный листок The Scoop (горстка новостей). Каждый понедельник редколлегия The Scoop верстают очередной номер с помощью ножниц и клея. 
During its golden age, the town had its own newspaper The Lost Nation Press. Now a group of enthusiasts publishes a weekly newsletter The Scoop. Every Monday, the editorial board gathers to put together a new issue with the help of glue and scissors. 
По фасадам домов в Lost Nation можно многое сказать о политических убеждениях и интересах их владельцев  (листай галерею-стрелки на фото ).
The houses' facades tell a lot about Lost Nation inhabitants, their passions, interests, and convictions (press the arrow to the right to flip through the images).

И только количество церквей не изменилось – так же три: Лютеранская, Пресвитерианская и Католическая. Большинство обитателей – прихожане одной из них. Воскресенье начинается с проповеди. Потом – еда.
And only the number of churches stayed the same through the town's history. Lost Nation still has three churches: Lutheran, Presbyterian and Catholic. Most of lostnationers belong to one.
Пастор Пелл, настоятель Лютеранской церкви, прост и близок к народу. 
Pastor Pell is the Lutheran minister. He is democratic and enthusiastic about all things "community."
А в Пресвитерианской церкви проповедник – школьная учительница-пенсионерка. Читать проповеди – ее хобби.
The minister in the Presbyterian church is a retired teacher. Delivering sermons is her hobby. 
Но сердце я оставила у Отца Франсиса в католической церкви. Он в Lost Nation по распределению из Ганы. Отец Франсис теплый и приветливый. Ему так и хочется покаяться во всех грехах.
But I left my heart with Father Francis, the leader of local Catholics. To serve God in Lost Nation was ong journey all the way from Ghana before the pandemic and stayed. Father Francis is warm and affable. You feel like confessing all you sins to him. 
Здание школы построили в 1900 году. Закрытие школы в 1986 городок оплакивает по сей день. Здание так и стоит бесхозным. Говорят, что там водятся приведения первых учителей.
The school was built in 1900. Its closing in 1986 is still mourned by the community. The building was sold to a private owner and has been closed to the public since. Nobody knows what is happening behind its walls now; they say you can see ghosts of its first teachers roaming the halls at night.

Каждый год проходит встреча выпускников. В 2022 со всей Америки приехало 250 человек, увеличив в этот вечер население городка в полтора раза.  На встрече никто не говорит красивых слов. Все зрелища тут начинаются с хлеба. 
The school reunion is held every year. In 2022, 250 graduates came from all over the country increasing the population by 1.5 times. No memorable speeches were delivered. People just chattered, caught up on the news and ate a lot. All spectacles in this farming community start with bread.  
Молодежи среди выпускников нет: самые молодые – выпуск 1986 года. Но есть и настоящие ветераны.
You would not see many young people here. The youngest participants graduated in 1986. And then there are true veterans.

Америку часто сравнивают с лоскутным одеялом—общество разнообразное по этническому составу представляет из себя функциональное единство. Клуб Quilting for Community шьет лоскутные одеяла с 1947, и их одеяла тоже отражают национальные скрепы.
The metaphor of America as a quilt is well known. The Quilting for Community club has been making quilts since 1947, and their quilts certainly reflect national values. 
Клуб собирается по понедельникам в Лютеранской церкви, но его члены – прихожанки всех церквей города. Иногда мужья и пастор Пел приходят помочь.
The club meets every Monday in the Lutheran church, but the participants are parishioners from all three town's churches. The husbands and Pastor Pell come to help. 
Начинается обед всегда с молитвы. После мужья моют посуду.
Every meal starts with prayer. After lunch, the husbands wash the dishes. 
На пасху проходит базар лоскутных одеял. Средства с продажи и непроданные одеяла идут на благотворительность.
The annual quilt bazaar happens over Easter. The profits from sales and the quilts that were not sold are donated to charity.

Here you can also buy Easter cookies. 
Самое популярное событие пасхальной недели – охота за яйцами. Сначала группа энтузиастов три часа прячет пластмассовые яйца с конфетами по всем углам детской площадки. К десяти утра прибывают дети и за две минуты сметают все.
The most popular event of the Easter week is an egg hunt. At first a group of volunteers spends three hours hiding eggs in all nooks and crannies of the playground. The children arrive by 10 am; two minutes later, all the eggs are found. 
По домам расходятся с трофеями.
Everybody leaves with trophies. 
Но главное событие года – фестиваль Rustic Days в честь Rustic (деревенский) Park на месте бывшей железной дороги
But the main event of the year is the Rustic Days festival named so after the Rustic Park, the Central Park of the Lost Nation, built where the railroad once was. 
Rustic Days проходит в середине июля и даже давящая Айовская жара не пугает участников. Начинаются праздник со спортивных соревнований и детских аттракционов в парке. 
Rustic Days takes place in the middle of July, and even oppressive Iowa heat does not scare off the participants. The festival starts with sports competitions and children's games. 
Днем можно спуститься на Main Street и поглазеть на выставку старых автомобилей. 
In the afternoon, one can go down to the Main Street and gaze at old cars. 
И конечно, нельзя пропустить городской парад в котором участвуют все организации и бизнесы города. Дети из 2022 изображают учащихся последних трех десятилетий школы.
The pinnacle of the festivities is the parade that features all the town's businesses and organizations. Children from 2022 are dressed as high school students from the last three decades before the school's closing. 
Городская полиция не только всех бережет, но и сама участвует в параде.
The town's police does not only protect everyone, but also participates in the parade. 
Парад – повод повысить гражданскую активность. Все – на выборы!
The parade is a perfect venue for increasing voter turnout. 
В 2022 фестиваль приурочен к 150 годовщине города и отмечается особо широко. Весь вечер на Main Street играет духовой оркестр.
The 2022 festival marks the sesquicentennial anniversary of Lost Nation, so this year, the celebration is wider than ever. The local orchestra is playing on Main Street all evening. 
Интернет сделал мир глобальной деревней, но мировые кризисы затрагивают Lost Nation только в форме новостей. Лостнейшенцы считают себя частью большого мира, но сначала они возделывают свой сад.
The internet has turned the world into a global village, but global crises reach Lost Nation only in the form of news. Lostnationers see themselves as part of the big world, only they start with attending to their own garden. 
Lost Nation – знак на дороге да горстка домов вдалеке – легко проехать. Сигнал моего телефона прерывается при подъезде к повороту, и это не так уж плохо. За эти несколько дней вне времени тревожной весной 2022 я всегда буду благодарна Lost Nation. 
Lost nation is just a sign on the road and a handful of houses far beyond. It is easy to miss it. My phone signal gets weak as I approach the turn, and that is a blessing. I will always be grateful to Lost Nation for these few days outside of time in the anxious spring of 2022.
